Detailing the Crew - Part 1

secondStar

This post will be a little more technical, and short on the pretty pictures.

Setting the Crew - Al-Nasr, Ren, & Ysuranel

In case you don't know, in Five Parsecs From Home, you can generate everything about your crew randomly, choose everything specifically, or somewhere inbetween. I went with the mostly random path, figuring it would be the most fun to play with the hand fate dealt me. I did decide the races of my crew instead of rolling or using the standard template, choosing 2 humans, 2 primary aliens and 2 minor aliens.

The Inquisitor and Alcolyte would be Humans, Ysuranel would be a Precursor (which fit best as Aedari), and Gill-on'Tou would be a K'Erin (which was close enough for a Kroot). Meanwhile, Acetl and Trin would be minor aliens and I would roll for them later.

Inquisitor Zholit al-Nasr

Al-Nasr rolls up Wasteland Nomads for his background, Power for his motivation, and Primitive for his class. The first two fit fine, especially the motivation, seeing as how he wants eternal life. His early years as a nomad on a desolate planet would probably entail death on a pretty regular basis, and he would naturally be looking for the best ways to guarantee his own survival. It would also make technology an almost mystical thing, spurring him to seek it out wherever he could.

His primitive class seemed to clash with his tech-lusting ways, but this could easily represent his current situation. He's constantly on the move (nomad background) looking for new pieces, so he's not being tied down to any one place or thing. I imagine if something stops working, he gets rid of it. The next treasure is always around the corner, after all. Woe be to any of his crew who he deems to be "broken."

The bonuses from his rolls gave him +1 Reactions and Speed, 2 Low-Tech Weapons, +2 XP, and a Rival (I expect a more puritan member of the Inquisition who is always hounding him). As captain, he also receives +1 Luck

Acolyte Jalen Ren

Ren was a little more of a blank slate coming in to this campaign. He's got some history, but his rolls helped defining the stating place for his character. For background, he got Long-Term Space Mission, motivation was Technology, and class was Hacker. the motivation fit perfectly for the alcolyte of al-Nasr's, and his background dovetailed into it nicely.

I imagine Ren was on a generational colonizing ship traveling from one star system to another without the benefit of a warp drive. They would have had one at the beginning of the journey, but somewhere along the way is quit functioning. This would lead to a scrappy character who knows how to bodge pieces together to get a functioning system. When the cable goes out in your bunk, you call Ren to fix it. But also, when an honest-to-goodness Inquisitor boards your ship and asks you to come with him, you don't refuse.

With a class like Hacker, I had to give Ren an alias, which is where Voidstone comes from.

Ren's bonuses game him a total of +3 Savvy (!), 1 Gadget, and a Rival.

First Mate Ysuranel

Ysuranel's rolls were a little strange for the character I had envisioned, but with a little creative fudging, they could work. His background was Bureaucrat, motivation is Adventure, and class is Scientist. Everyone's classes sure were being cooperative for the tech-laden crew I wanted to build! As a former Exodite, Ysuranel would have had to leave a lot fo his former life behind when we left the planet. Perhaps he was a high-level leader amongst his tribe, but when he ended up killing someone, he lost all his status and privilege that went along with his title.

With nothing left for him on his planet, he had no choice but to embrace the stars and set out into the void. The shame of being second-in-command on a human vessel!

Because he is a Precursor, Ysuranel starts with +1 speed and -1 Toughness, but his rolls gave him +1 Savvy, 5 credits, 1 Low-Tech Weapon, and 1 Gadget. He's definitely the money behind al-Nasr's throne.

Next time on 2nd Parsec to the Right we'll finish up the details on the rest of the crew.
