Detailing the Crew - Part 2

Setting the Crew - Gill, Acetl, & Trin

Last time we dug into the details of Inquisitor al-Nasr, Acolyte Jalen Ren, and First Mate Ysuranel. Today, we'll detail the rest of the crew.

Quartermaster Gill-on'Tou

I decided to make Gill, my Kroot, using the K'Erin alien template. They're probably the most "savage" of the primary alien races from the Five Parsecs book, and it was pretty close to the character Games Workshop has set up for the Kroot. Rolling for his background, he got Military Outpost, motivation was Freedom, and class ended up as Primitive. Most of these line up pretty spectacularly with a member of the Kroot who was living on a T'au world. His tribe would have been in a constant state of military readiness, but it's easy to imagine some members members of his tribe wanting to be free of the yoke of The Greater Good.

While Kroot are perfectly adept at using technology, I can imagine Gill not wanting anything to do with battlesuits, drones, or the other accouterments of the T'au military. All that fancy tech ain't no match for a good blaster at your side, as they say. This aligns him particularly well with al-Nasr's way of thinking. Always on the lookout for new tech, but not afraid to dispose of the old stuff when it's no longer of any use.

Gill essentially gets +1 Toughness for being a K'Erin, and the bonuses he got from his rolls were +1 Reactions and Speed, +2 XP, and 1 Low-Tech weapon. For a group hanging around with a tech-hungry Inquisitor, they sure were starting out with a bunch of low-tech weapons!

Chief Engineer Acetl & Engi Trin Flintfinger

Acetl and Trin Flintfinger are both minor alien species. This is one of the options in the Strange Characters part of character creation. Their stats basically start out as normal humans, but they each get a discount to advancements on a certain stat, rolled randomly, and marked with an asterisk in their profile. Acetl ended up rolling for Speed, and Trin got Toughness. In a moment of GM-itude, I swapped them so my Ratter would be quick-quick and my Saurian would be tough.

You'll see why I'm talking about them at the same time in just a second.

For the other rolls, both Trin and Acetl got Frontier Gang for their background and Discovery for their motivation. Clearly these two know each other! For class, Acetl rolled Enforcer and Trin got Soldier, which set up a nice power dynamic between them. As an Enforcer, Acetl would have been firmly in charge of his past of the gang, which I decided was a mercenary group on a deathworld named Theapra.

As I've said in other posts, Acetl and Trin's squad was left for dead during a mission, and al-Nasr recovered what he thought were their bodies, but what he actually got were two new crew members. Acetl is the stable, no-nonsense one, while Trin is the sneaky mischievous one. Either Acetl isn't as good an enforcer as he thinks, or you just can't keep a Ratter on a leash.

Acetl's bonuses ended up with +2 Combat, +1 Savvy, 1 Gear, and a Patron. Being from a former member of a mercenary group, Acetl can bring his contacts with him. Trin's bonuses were +2 Combat, +1 Savvy, 1 Gear and 2 Credits (lower than rolled been due to his status as a minor alien).

Rolling for all the equipment left the crew pretty well outfitted at the beginning of the campaign. With all the Savvy increases, I was able to roll on the High-Tech Weapons table 3 times, and ended up with 2 Glare Swords and a Hand Laser. The rest was pretty standard stuff, highlights being a shotgun for Trin to match his model and a Distraction Bot, Insta-wall and Frag Vest for gear and gadgets. They also ended up with a Purifier for the ship, which will help with the day-to-day expenses of the crew.

Speaking of which: the crew's ship. Al-Nasr doesn't fly the fanciest craft around, rolling a Repurposed Science Vessel. While it doesn't have any fancy equipment pre-loaded, it's cheap and fit with al-Nasr's technical ways. Plus, this baby can fit so much xenos tech in it. And so The Ulysses was christened.

Next time on 2nd Parsec to the Right, we'll see what backwater they crew has landed on, as we figure all the details for their first world: Avernus Prime.
